Skunk and how to get rid of the smell

I buddy of mine had one of his females sprayed by a skunk so he called me asking for help.

This is what you need to know about american bulldogs and skunks. When they get together it smells. I know it is over simplified but prevention is the key. have you dog trained on a recall even when there is a strange animal in the "hood".

To understand the enemy skunk you have to know how it defends itself. The skunk can spray up to five times and a total distance of ten feet. Most dogs will get sprayed at "point blank" range. The skunk can then reproduce new musk from his anal gland in about 10 days to make it full again, i guess his war chest is a renewable resource.

The best remedy i have hear of used and it comes with many people saying it works is:

4 cups hydogen peroxide
4 tablespoons of baking soda
1 tea spoon of normal dish soap ( used to thicken and hold the other 2 together)

Use rubber gloves.
work from the head to the tail do not get in the dogs eyes....it will be very painful and harmful to the dogs if you do.
rinse it off.
repeat it if you need to

Remember that if the skunk is still alive and it gets away. There is a chance that your american bulldog will take another run at the skunk......be prepaired.
